Hampstead Staircase

After purchasing the flat above their own lower ground floor apartment, our clients approached us with the brief to design an internal staircase connecting both flats.

The most suitable position for the stairs was in the living room, and that required a sensitive approach to create an impressive yet not intrusive design.

It was essential for our clients to keep the spaces light and open, and allow for a lot of natural light on both levels.

The floating timber steps and wire balustrades are sympathetic to the flat's existing structure and modern feel. The design language is simple and firm while delivering the functionality needed and the benefits of an open, airy and transparent building structure.

Eva brought our dream to reality, designing a staircase that joined two apartments while allowing maximum light to flow through the space. A year later a visiting surveyor friend walked up the stairs and remarked how solid they feel, with no vibration at all. The steel strings look as good now as they did on day 1 and have not needed any adjustments to their tension. We are very happy with the service provided by Carta Nova and the end result of the project.
