This stage design explored the segments of a romantic relationship in the context of modern times. We decided on a simple, neutral and even sparse design to create space for the play’s rich, deep, complex and often playful script. Instead of a rigid stage we opted for a malleable textile construction that underlined the ephemeral nature of feelings. To emphasise certain emotions we used projections and variegated lights as overlays. The stage design elements underlined the dialogue and enabled a new level of understanding and interpretation of the action on stage.
What we did:
Loving is beautiful. More beautiful than singing.
Loving takes two people. That is the tragedy of love.
The tune that is yours and mine to play upon this earth.
We’ll play it out the best we know, whatever it is worth.
What’s lost is lost, we can’t regain what went down in the flood.
But happiness to me is you and I love you more than blood.
